Medical devices are defined as instruments, apparatus, materials, software, or reagents intended for diagnosis, treatment, alleviation, direct prevention of human disease, or affecting human body structure or function without pharmacological, immunological, or metabolic action. The purpose of a Medical Device Center is to manage equipment procurement, evaluation, acceptance, maintenance, calibration, and anomaly management. Due to the complexity and quantity of medical equipment, proper management is challenging, thus establishing a dedicated center is essential. On April 1, 2018, Dr. Liren Liao became the first director of the Medical Device Center at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, focusing on digitizing management and developing a cloud-based medical equipment system. This system participated in the 2019 National Healthcare Quality Award – Smart Healthcare category and won the “Administrative Management Mark.” During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Liao led research on rapid ozone sterilization for ventilators and established a standard operating procedure for ozone sterilization (Wu & Liao, 2022, Taipei Medical Journal). In 2022, medical staff from Belize were trained at the center to strengthen international collaboration. On September 1, 2023, Dr. Liao handed over the director role to Dr. Tseng Yih-Shiou (Urology), who currently oversees the Medical Device Center.
