Development of Head & Neck Ultrasound

CV

In 2022, Dr. Liren Liao obtained a full professorship in Electrical Engineering at Yuan Ze University, becoming the first ENT specialist in Taiwan promoted to professor due to contributions in head and neck ultrasound. High-resolution ultrasound of neck soft tissues allows measurement of structures such as salivary glands, thyroid, and muscles, as well as evaluation of lymph nodes, thyroid, and salivary gland tumors. Clinicians can distinguish benign from malignant tumors based on ultrasound imaging characteristics. Research in ENT ultrasound has progressed rapidly, with Dr. Liao leading a team to advance head and neck soft tissue ultrasound, producing high-quality research that benefits patients. Past studies include computer-assisted models for thyroid and lymph node lesions. Ultrasound has become the first-line tool for evaluating head and neck tumors and can guide fine-needle aspiration cytology for preoperative assessment. Research also includes real-time ultrasound-guided ethanol injection for benign neck cysts, published in JMU 2020, and approved by Taiwan National Health Insurance in 2020. Awards include the 2021 Ultrasound Excellence Paper Award by Prof. Chen Xiyao and the 26th Dushi-Mian ENT Head & Neck Tumor Award. The team also develops other real-time ultrasound-guided neck treatments, such as radiofrequency ablation of benign tumors. Dr. Liao has presented internationally award-winning papers, including "Ultrasonographic Differentiation between Kikuchi’s Disease and Lymphoma in Patients with Cervical Lymphadenopathy" and "Comparison of Strain Elastography, Shear Wave Elastography and Conventional Ultrasound in Diagnosing Thyroid Nodules." The team regularly hosts ultrasound workshops for ENT physicians, both domestic and international, sharing knowledge and improving patient care.
